What is Cambridge IGCSE?

The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is an examination-based curriculum rooted in the United Kingdom’s GCSE framework, which has been adapted to the international student body from diverse backgrounds. The IGCSE is known for its international qualification and flexibility for students to further their studies in tertiary education.

The IGCSE is designed for students under the British curriculum, where secondary students are enrolled under a wide number of subjects for three years (typically Year 7 to 9) before selecting a number of subjects to sit for the IGCSE. (From Year 10 to 11) It is carried out twice a year, in May/June and October/November, with results out by August and January respectively.

Each subject is graded from A* to G, with A* being the highest grade.

When students usually prepare for IGCSE

Students often spend two years preparing for the IGCSE, starting from Year 10 if they enrol in a recognised Cambridge school.

This is because they are required to select the optimal number of subjects that are projected to support their tertiary education by then.

However, it is recommended for students, while supported by the school and parents, to prepare their strict self-study regiment as a part of their IGCSE preparation 6 months ahead of the examinations. For example, students sitting in the May/June session will need to begin their self-study from December to January, while students sitting for the October/November session would need to start around April to May.

For most schools offering the IGCSEs, students are expected to sit for mock papers a couple of months ahead of the official examinations to simulate their test-taking performance, which is why planning six months ahead is ideal for students.

The global recognition of the IGCSE allows for a universal array of options for tertiary education, as well as wider options for majors and studies due to the subject flexibility of the IGCSE.

How IGCSE supports subject confidence and future study

The IGCSE offering a wide variety of subjects offers the stepping stone for students to exercise their freedom in exploring their areas of interest. For example, at Tanarata International Schools, it is required for students to choose 5 subjects minimum for IGCSE, while English and Mathematics are mandatory. Beyond that, students and parents are advised to select subjects that will support the student’s future area of study, instead of being split into Arts or Sciences streams.

The full array of subjects that can be taken for the IGCSE can be found on the Cambridge website. However, not all subjects may be offered at all schools.

Beyond core subjects, the IGCSE also has a subject designed to encourage learners to think about global issues and explore possible solutions, namely Global Perspectives.

This helps students develop forward-thinking and how they can participate in the solutions for global issues as a part of their personal and professional development in the future.
